What's in a Name?

I am covering a few days here. After spending three nights in Inverness, we drove back to San Francisco Sunday December 22d. The day following the winter solstice. The anniversary of the day Beth's mom died.

I did a little shopping at Rainbow. Then, we walked to North Beach for dinner with Meyer and his roommate Cameron. We ate at the U.S. Restaurant on Columbus. We loved it. Great food, service and ambience. We learned that it was a favorite of Robin Williams.

Busy day Monday December 23d. Early spin class at Equinox. Like a ghost town. Only three people in the class. New gym. Holiday season. We'll see if they get the big rush in January or not.

I went and hand pumped some water out of the boat's bilge. Drove back home and did ANOTHER spin class. Again, only three people. I still got good exercise.

Then, I took muni to UCSF to meet Thomas for a gift exchange. I sat through his treatment. It sounds dreadful but we had a lot of fun. We joked with the nurses and discussed our upcoming trip to Nashville. I want to see the Johnny Cash Museum.

Great views from UCSF

I wore my hospital mask home on muni. People gave me a wide berth

Different subject: my name. I was Barry Gorlick at birth; that is what is on my birth certificate. My dad applied to the state bar  in the late 1960s.  He got a copy of his birth certificate listing his surname as Gorelick. He changed our family name to Gorelick. His brothers and their families remained Gorlick.

Significance: Gorelick is probably correct. We assume Grandpa Meyer took what they gave him at Ellis island.  Gorelick sounds better to me. Three syllables. Better ring to it. More authentic. I didn’t really like Gorlick.

After writing this, I got a notification that I had a package. It turned out to be a thumb drive with audio recordings that my dad made of my grandfather Meyer's life story in the 1960s. It is in Yiddish. Wonderful to hear my dad's voice and my grandfather's voice. I'll try to add some of it along with the written translation to this blog.

Winter Hibernation

I'm really tired. Please wake me in April. Good night. Winter hibernation starts now.
