Don't Let the Exceptions Swallow Up the Rule

We went to Mark and Helen's annual holiday potluck yesterday night.

I came home too drunk to blog. Just went to bed. I can't even remember if I brushed my teeth. Fortunately Beth drank less so she could drive us home. Mark and Helen are serious about wine. They have wine fridges in almost every room of their house. The wines at the party were spectacular. Before dinner, we drank Domaine Carneros champagne (from CA so technically not champagne). Then, with dinner they probably opened a dozen more bottles. The highlight for me was a giant bottle of Winderlea Pinot Noir from Oregon.

Oh yeah, the thing on my head.  A paper crown. We started off the meal with a ceremonial cross-handed pulling of British crackers. Helen is English.

They pop and eject little silly prizes and paper crowns. I got a bottle opener. Of no use to me, because I don't drink beer or almost anything from a bottle or a can.

I'd like to tell you what we ate but I was so busy drinking wine, I don't remember it all. I remember a salad with lots of croutons, some tilapia with a yummy vegetable sauce, eggplant parmesan, thinly sliced steak, cauliflower with prosciutto in it, inari with japanese savory custard, pecan pie, lemon meringue pie and ollalieberry pie. Lots of great port, etc to finish off the meal.

Beth and I survived the day today, despite our hangovers. We took a walk along the Embarcadero, going out on to every pier we could walk on. It was a nice calm sunny winter day. Not too hot; not too cold. Very San Francisco. There were some beautiful clouds over the financial district, looking eastward from one of the piers.

I played around with our new TV and figured out how to look at the photos off my camera. I looked at some from Scandinavia in 2016. We went to Vigelund Park in Oslo. Gustav Vigeland was a Norwegian sculptor. They have a huge park in Oslo full of his stuff. Here are a couple of my favorites.

I feel hypocritical about my diet. I am officially a seagan. A vegan who also eats seafood. However, a wise vegetarian friend of mine said that if he goes to someones home, he tries to eat what they serve, without making a fuss. I am probably stretching that wisdom a bit wide by allowing myself to eat anything and everything at Mark and Helen's party. It is working for me. I also don't keep to my diet on vacations. I must be careful that the exceptions don't swallow up the rule.

Winter Hibernation

I'm really tired. Please wake me in April. Good night. Winter hibernation starts now.
