Up early for a 6:30 spin class at Equinox. Didn't sleep that great. Hard to get up. Good hard workout. Felt energized.
Stopped by my old office at 1:00 pm. Nice to be there. Good to see Estefanie and Jeff. I don't miss work one iota. Seeing all the files in Jeff's office and how busy he is reminds me that I made the right decision to retire.
I had to pick up some documents for a deposition I am taking for Jeff on Thursday. From one of my old cases. I am taking the depo of a doctor who I consider a friend.
Off to the Amtrak station in Jack London Square. Catching a train to Sacramento to visit Peg. She is working in Sacramento for a few weeks on a campaign to organize public sector SEIU workers. Fairly recent US Supreme Court decision made it optional for public sector employees to join the union. Hard to persuade workers to pay for something that they can get for free. They need to understand the struggles that unions went through to get them the benefits they have now. Without their contributions, the power they have will erode.
Great train ride to Sacramento. Relaxing. I did some prep for for my deposition on Thursday.
Arrived in Sacramento near 5 pm. Ubered to the SEIU headquarters to meet Peg. We stopped for a nearby drink at a speakeasy called Shady Lady. We each had a Mai Tai.
Off to Mikuni for Sushi. I called my friend Marc Marcus for a sushi recommendation in Sacramento. He did not disappoint.
Peg and I had a great dinner. All our usual favorites: hamachi sashimi, uni, amaebe, etc. Nice cans of Sake - like we got from the vending machines in Japan. Very enjoyable dinner. Nice to have some alone time with Peg.
I had a hard time finding a hotel for tonight. I figured out why - there is a Sacramento Kings game tonight. I took Peg up on her offer to stay with her at the Holiday Inn. We dropped off my bags and went out for a drink at the Yard House.
I feel like I am able to open up to my children and let them know what I think in ways that my parents were not open to me. I can tell them what I think, what I worry about, what my goals are, etc. Peg and I had a great talk over a few drinks.
Back to the hotel. I am writing this blog while Peg catches up on the last few days. She is enjoying reading about Karl Yoneda. I hope I don't snore tonight and keep her up.
